I'd like to say this is what I did in the last year, but it actually took place over14 months. Still, I count them all as my mid-century accomplishments:
- Completed my CPCU
- Got a new MINI (red!)
- Went back to school to start finishing my degree in International Studies
- Went to Scotland, competed in The Worlds
- Quit the band (OK, that's not exactly an "accomplishment" but is still noteworthy)
- Got hitched
- Got to see my son's high school graduation (phew!), daughter completed third year of college
- Bought a house (not completed, but it's going full speed ahead).
- Read (listened to) 27 books! About half were classics I'm finally getting to. And this does not include the half dozen or so I read for school.
- Update 8/23/11 8:30 PM - survived my first earthquake. I could live without ever doing THAT again.
It'll be hard to beat this year, but I'm optimistic. Already on the agenda for the Fall: Moving into the new place, taking more classes, going to Vegas. And sometime in 2012 or early 2013 . . . India. I also want to get involved in some meaningful volunteer work. While I can, I am trying to live one of my favorite quotes:
"Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same amount of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Theresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein." H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
So far, I'm not having any problems with this mid-life thing. Mostly, I am thankful for my blessings - my family and friends, my health, my mind.
Another old favorite:
"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand and strawberries in the other,* body thoroughly used up, worn out, and screaming - 'Woo Hoo! What a ride!'"
* In my case, it will most likely be an Amador County zinfandel and some smoked gouda.
